Darrell is a graduate of Freehold Boro High School where he played football under Coach Larry Boice. Darrell was ranked as the second-best linebacker prospect in the Northeast by Superprep, and was also named one of the top linebacker prospects in the East by PrepStar.

As a senior, Darrell was named Monmouth County Player-of-the-Year, named to the New Jersey All-State team and was a three-time All-Conference and All-Area pick.

Darrell lead his team to a division championship during his final year at Freehold Boro, registering 99 tackles, five blocked kicks, five pass breakups, and three forced fumbles.

Darrell was a four-time letter winner in basketball for Freehold Boro High School and was the recipient of the Donald and Louise Gabbert Endowed Scholarship.
